Memory Lane: the Red Barn

January 24th, 2010 -- Posted in The Red Cross | No Comments »

Can you imagine a time when there were relatively few fast-food chains, coffee was just coffee and entrepreneurs were not all in a line to open the next, trendy bistro?  I can.  I grew up in that era.  Back then, dinnertime meant lining up around the table instead of lining up around the drive-up window, Starbuck was still that guy from “Moby Dick”, and “Chez” was just a misspelling of the place where the Mets played.  Yet, we were all tempted by the forbidden fruit and eventually found the way out of Eden.  Along the road, a number of restaurants came and went.  One of those was the Red Barn.

The Red Barn was a hamburger rival of both Burger King and McDonald’s, but they were also the first to offer both chicken and fish.  Their signature hamburger, the “Big Barney” actually predated the “Big Mac” by a bit, and their quarter pound burger, the “Barnbuster” actually came before the “Quarter Pounder” even though it strongly resembled the “Whopper”.  Their most used slogan went, “When the hungries hit, when the hungries hit, hit the Red Barn”.  The “Hungries” were their three iconic mascots.  Hamburger Hungry originally looked like Ernie from Sesame Street, but they gave him a cap and a V-neck sweater to avoid confusion.  Chicken Hungry looked like a fried leg of chicken, and Fish Hungry was just a big, blue fish.  Even though I ate there from time to time, to tell the truth, I really do not remember much about the food.  Personally, I remember preferring the products of both McDonald’s and Burger King, and that new upstart, “Taco Bell”.  I never tried Red Barn fried-chicken and I never ate their fish.  Nonetheless, I still have fond memories of Red Barn from High School.

In the 70s, when I still ate such things, the Red Barn was our school’s Friday hangout.  On Fridays after school sporting events, everyone would meet down at the Red Barn over on 73rd and Federal in Westminster.  Curiously enough, our cross-town rivals, Ranum, would meet just up the road and across the street at the McDonald’s.  Even though they had the better food choice, we had the better “winter” choice because that McDonald’s was one of the old, golden arches McDonald’s with no indoor seating and no patio.  Our Red Barn had ample indoor seating and everyone knew to meet there for a snack before deciding how to spend the rest of the Friday evening.  Many good, Friday memories contain a meeting earlier in the evening at the Red Barn.

At their peak, Red Barn had over 400 restaurants in 19 States and two foreign countries, but, for whatever reason, they did not make it.  They had the loyal clientele, they had the handouts and they had a decent product, but they still sailed into oblivion sometime in the late 70’s.  You can still find remnants of old Red Barns turned something else like other restaurants, car dealerships or rental stores, but other than those faded memories and a few mementos, Red Barn Hamburgers are now just a part of history.

If you ever ate there, colored in one of their coloring books or took home a free glass, you are part of the history.  You actually still can visit that history at www.barnbuster.net.  This website is completely devoted to the memory of the Red Barn complete with pictures, commercials snippits, and T-shirts for sale.  I tried to get some of their pictures to post here for your enjoyment, but was unable.  Nonetheless, if you are interested at all, all the general memories are parked there for posterity.  As for the personal memories, I’ll just smile and keep those to myself.

Kabbalah: 72 Names of God and The Red Kabbalah String Bracelet

July 29th, 2009 -- Posted in The Red Cross | No Comments »

Kabbalah literally means “receiving”. Until today that wisdom of Kabbalah was hidden away in ancient texts, available only to scholars and historians. Now, after centuries the power of Kabbalah is right here. Kabbalah offers principals of living in the light. Is not about religion, it’s about spiritual enlighten.

It’s like turning on the LIGHT in a dark room. These forces empower us to completely change our lives and absolutely transform our world. According to kabala the light is found in each one of us, and the way to find it is by using proactive behavior instead of reactive. Example: if somebody curses you, do not follow your instinct to curse him back (being reactive), solve it by being proactive- bless him instead.

Kabbalah profoundly influenced the greater thinkers of history, including ABRAHAM, MOSES, JESUS, MOHAMMED, PHYTAGORAS, PLATO, and NEWTON AND SHAKESPEARE. Example: let’s go back 3,400 years ago when the Israelis stood in front of the red sea. Pharaoh and his army were chasing them, when all they wanted was to kill the massive group of the Israelis who resist the army of Pharaoh. The Israelis were concerned. There was nowhere to go. – They either drown in the red sea or go back to face Pharaoh’s chaos. -there were no more options. Then they cried out loud to god, asking for help from the creator. While god answer was- “what do you want from me?” “Go jump in to the see”. By meditating on the 72 names of god they succeed by them selves to open the red sea -and not even one drop of water fell on them until the very last person crossed that big red sea.)

Kabbalah: The 72 names of god

According to Kabbalah god has 72 names when each one of these names is a 3 letter code. Letter in Hebrew literally means “sign”, a clue, signal,. We are seeking all our lives for those “signs” that will guide us to make an important decision with our love life, with our new job and even when we just want to purchase something, we convince ourselves that if we will find that store on our way back it is meant to be…. The 72 names of god are 3 letters -combination and can be use as a very special code.

(Now let them choose one coin from the Kabbalah coins…., explain the meanings of each code that they picked and the combination of all 8 of them…)

The 72 names of god is the power of mind over matter. This is the ability to eliminate every kind of chaos, , weather in the form of fears and negative emotions , or the challenges of serious illness like cancer or aids god forbid. The 3 letter sequence that forms each of the 72 names of god operates much like a cable transmitting various blends of energy into our physical world. Through the letters you can access light that is within YOU- the LIGHT that comes from the creator.

The 72 names of god are not just “names” in an ordinary sense. When you look at them or carry these 3 letters of each name of god, you acquire the capability to control and positively transform your entire world. In fact, they have always existed within you, they are inside all human kind, we just need to be aware of their existence. This is a big privilege to wear something like that and you can feel the energy that this item has from the moment you put it on. It has the certain energy that will carry you to a better place, a place of acceptance, of unconditional love and healing.

(Which one you like? Do you want to get the 8 combinations or just the one you picked?! Of course the 8 names are more powerful and therefore you will make them choose this amazing item!

Kabbalah red String bracelet

Explain about Kabbalah – mark the fact that it’s not about religion at all it is about spiritual enlightens! According to Kabbalah the most powerful way to rid off evil eye is by wearing the red string on our left hand. -the side of our body is the side we give, while the left is the side to receive! – We want to receive all the good luck that we can get! By putting a red string on our left hand we avoid from “over looking”- the main cause of “evil eye” and envious! Red is such a powerful color because it stands for negative and positive at the same time- it is symbolize blood and love. This specific red string comes from Jerusalem, from the west wall. It is wrapped around a Torah book 7 times (a lucky number in the torah, 7 days of creation…) , they meditate in Rachel’s tomb (our mother Rachel ) and just after that they cut it to little pieces and its been placed inside this bracelet.

Fellowes SB-99Ci Cross-Cut Paper Shredder Review

July 22nd, 2009 -- Posted in The Red Cross | No Comments »

If you share an office with one or two other people, and your shredding needs are fairly light, you may want to consider purchasing the Fellowes SB-99Ci. A nice cross-cut shredder designed to destroy a respectable seventeen sheets at a time, the SB-99Ci also is able to easily shred credit cards, compact discs, DVDs, staples, and paper clips. Here we will take a close look at some of the pros and cons of owning a SB-99Ci.

Pros:

As with its many of its other shredders, Fellowes has equipped the SB-99Ci with its very impressive jam proof function that won’t allow the machine to run if someone is trying to feed it more than it can handle. This is a very important feature because paper jams can be a real mess, and not everyone is always going to know how much paper a given shredder can handle at one time. We tested it out, and found it to be effective, and liked the red light/green light system for letting us know whether we were within the limit or not. Whether you have a single shredder, or a few of them spread out around the floor of your business, the noise of the average shredder can be a bit of an annoyance to your office mates. The Fellowes SB-99Ci was pretty impressive in that it ran pretty much silently, and we couldn’t see how it would be much of a distraction over and above the hum of a normally functioning office. Safety is always a concern when using shredders, as one careless moment could cause some pretty serious injuries. To that end, Fellowes has developed a remarkable technology that places a sensor at the paper feed that is able to detect body heat, and will shut off the machine if you hand gets too close to the opening. We bravely checked it out, and it worked extremely well. We are guessing that Fellowes competitors will be trying to imitate this impressive safety feature sooner rather than later. We thought the 9 gallon bin was easy to empty and deal with in general, and we like the fact that the SB-99Ci has casters for easy moving about the office.

Cons:

Though this is pretty typical for a lighter use shredder like the SB-99Ci, it is important to know before you buy that this particular machine is designed to run for only about twenty minutes at a time before it will require an off time of forty minutes or so. Offices that need to continuously shred documents will want to consider a heavier duty shredder with a continuous duty motor. There is no jam release on the SB-99Ci, but we are guessing that is because Fellowes has such faith in its jam proof system that the figure you won’t need it. Also typical of most machines in its class, you will need to oil the cutters of the SB-99Ci periodically. Larger commercial shredders will include auto oiling technology. However, since this machine doesn’t have that type of technology, you will need to oil the shredder after every few uses. It seems to us that this machine could and should come with an automatic sleep mode to save power when not in use.

Recommendation: For light use, the SB-99Ci is about as reliable and feature-laden machine as you are going to find anywhere. The two year warranty is also a bonus, and it is worth noting that the cutter themselves are actually under warranty for the life of the machine. You can’t do much better than that.
